The value of a poker hand is the strength of the hand and the particular poker variant being played lays down the rules according to which it is determined which hand has the bet value. However, the term value is interpreted by skilled poker players as part of game tactics where it means betting for value. Thus when a player is betting or raising for value, he is helping to build up the pot size by himself contributing and inducing his opponents to respond by calling. Generally a bet for value is different from a protection play or bluffing play wager, although it can be posted with the purpose of playing protection or bluff game.

Players who put a bet for value in the pot must have some positive expectation such as winning more than one wager for each wager he lays, to make it work. Interestingly, pot odds is of no value in such situations as it requires the players to decide whether raising or calling is more profitable and they do not consider folding as an option. It has been seen players, either with a made hand or a drawing hand, make good application of the bet for value situation although a drawing hand is less guaranteed for a win than a made hand.

So, in a Texas hold ‘em game, a player has 8 and 6 and the flop cards are 9, 7 and 2 giving him eight possible outs to make a straight draw hand. With 47 cards unknown to him, his chance of forming a straight hand is once in every six attempts. So for him a bet is advantageous if six or more of his opponents call him which will allow him to win once and lose on five occasions for every six hands of play. In case, less than six opponents call his bet, he stands to lose his money and should only call in his turn of betting action.
